  1.          ANATOMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN LENS CHOICE

  3. Sometimes the patients ocular anatomy dictates the lens choice.
  4.  
  5. If the patient has a distorted cornea 
  6. the only lens type that may give 
  7. acceptable vision is a rigid lens.  
  8. Since the rigid lens masks the 
  9. distortion by allowing the tear layer 
  10. to neutralize it, the front of the lens 
  11. becomes the new, regular front 
  12. refracting surface of the eye.
  13.  
  14. A hydrogel lens will conform to the 
  15. irregular surface with no significant 
  16. tear layer to neutralize the 
  17. distortion, therefore, the vision is 
  18. not significantly improved.
  19.  
  20. Patients with corneal distortion from trauma, disease, surgery, keratoconus or other causes usually are best fit with rigid lenses.
  21.
